Rivals - The Lancia D50 and the Mercedes-Benz W196
Product Reference: TSB1

Mercedes-Benz and Juan Manuel Fangio - Lancia and Alberto Ascari; at the beginning of 1954 it promised to be a match made in heaven but, sadly, the Lancia D50 was not ready to compete with the Mercedes W196 until the very end of the year. In 1955 there was a tremendous but all-too-brief battle at Monaco, but Ascari was killed a few days later and then Lancia pulled out of racing and handed the D50s to Scuderia Ferrari. Nonetheless, Chris Nixon’s account of the design and development of both cars and the races in which they took part makes for an enthralling read. 200 photographs approx.
