1955 Jaguar D-type 3,442 cc 270 bhp @ 6,000 rpm. A superbly detailed Limited Edition Print of 250 signed by the artist Tony Matthews. The D-Type was built by Jaguar Cars between 1954 and 1957 and it won the Le Mans 24 Hour race three times. This was a factory built racing car that followed the C-Type and kept the same highly successful straight-6 XK engine, but uprated to 3.8 litres. It also carried on carried on with the innovative Dunlop disc brakes that had been seen on the C-Type. Although Mike Hawthorn won in the D-Type at Le Mans in 1955, this was largely due to the withdrawal of Mercedes following the worst ever accident in motorsport history when the driver of a Mercedes 300 SLR catapulted into the grandstand killing the driver and 80 plus spectators. In 1956 the works team fared badly but the private Ecurie Ecosse team cars took first and second places. Jaguar withdrew from racing as a factory team at the end of that season but the following year the D-Type went on to have its most successful Le Mans race ever with D-Types taking the first four places and sixth. Production of the D-Type was ended by a fire at the Browns Lane plant in 1957 which destroyed a number of built and partly built cars together with vital jigs and tools.
