These two films were made by the late David Clarke on a shoestring budget. He was a very successful businessman and a brilliant amateur film maker who took a couple of 16mm cameras and some simple sound equipment to Monaco and Reims and produced two superb films that record GP racing in 1950s. ‘The 1955 Monaco GP’ was one of the most dramatic races of all time, with the surprising failure of the Mercedes of Fangio and Moss, the memorable Ascari ‘dive’ into the harbour in his Lancia and Maurice Trintignant’s surprise victory for Ferrari. ‘The Reims GP 1957’ was not a Championship event, but was no less exciting for that. Stuart Lewis-Evans led for most of the race in the Vanwall while Fangio and Hawthorn renewed their classic battle of 1953. The race was eventually won by Luigi Musso in a Ferrari.
